David Wishart and the Wishart Tobacco Concern
David Wishart was a Scotsman and London tobacconist who is popularly given as the originator of The Highlander, which was a figure in folk costume alledged to have political connotation that would go on to be adopted as a trade sign by snuff men commonly. Wishart established himself in Coventry Street in 1720, and the firm of Wishart & Co. would relocate in 1880 to Rupert Street, thereafter to 41 Haymarket, and subsequently to 35 Panton Street, and would survive into the twentieth century.
