John Rutter and the Rutter Tobacco Concern
John Rutter (1742–1826) was a London snuff maker who established himself circa 1790 and operated from premises including 9 Newsgate Street and 4 Love Lane in Aldermanbury before acquiring the Ravensbury Mills in Mitcham by 1810. Various members of the Rutter family would participate in the tobacco firm including Isaac Rutter, the nephew of the founder. It is unclear the ultimate disposition of the Rutter firm, but it ceased operating the Ravensbury Mills in either 1925 or 1926 and sold the premesis to the Whiteley Products company in the latter year for the sum of £4,200.
